{"id":13,"date":"2007-10-29T07:32:01","date_gmt":"2007-10-29T14:32:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lucazoid.com\/bilateral\/projects\/"},"modified":"2015-06-23T16:14:00","modified_gmt":"2015-06-23T05:14:00","slug":"current","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/lucazoid.com\/bilateral\/current\/","title":{"rendered":"Current Activities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What I&#8217;m up to this year&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2015:<br \/>\n<\/strong>In April I&#8217;m heading to Kandos for CEMENTA festival, presenting Anthony McCall&#8217;s <em>Line Describing a Cone<\/em> there with Louise Curham, in an outdoors setting (report <a href=\"http:\/\/teachingandlearningcinema.org\/2015\/05\/07\/line-describing-a-cone-in-2015\/\">here<\/a>).<br \/>\nI&#8217;m continuing to push on with the <em>Sugar vs the Reef<\/em> project, with visits to Mackay in Queensland to collaborate with retired farmer John Sweet (details <a href=\"http:\/\/yeomansproject.com\/sugar-reef-the-story-so-far\/\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>2014:<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>Yeomans Project<\/em> rolls on until late January at the AGNSW, and in April at the Redlands Art Prize at the National Art School, with a Field Trip to <a href=\"http:\/\/yeomansproject.com\/field-trip-to-oaks-organics\/\">The Oaks<\/a>, a Keyline Farm on the outskirts of Sydney.<br \/>\nLouise Curham and I (Teaching and Learning Cinema) do a short residency at Canberra Contemporary Artspace, where we develop and present our first performance re-enactment of Malcolm Le Grice&#8217;s <em>Horror Film 1<\/em> (1971).<br \/>\nThis year, for the first time I&#8217;m co-ordinating the first year &#8220;Visual Foundations&#8221; programme for all design and art students at UOW.<br \/>\nAt Big Fag Press, we launch in our new home in Glebe, and print some lovely editions, particularly by Jo Law, and by the Elastic Collective.<br \/>\nWith Brogan Bunt and Kim Williams, beginning a new project <a href=\"http:\/\/walking-upstream.net\/\">Walking Upstream: Waterways of the Illawarra<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2013:<\/strong><br \/>\nFrom May to August I&#8217;ll be in London for an Australia Council residency. I&#8217;ll be working with m&#8217;colleague Louise Curham on research towards the re-enactment of Malcolm Le Grice&#8217;s <em>Horror Film 1<\/em> (1971) &#8211; more details about the project as it unfolds <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachingandlearningcinema.org\/2012\/07\/06\/malcolm-le-grices-horror-film\/\">over here at the Teaching and Learning Cinema<\/a> website. Throughout the year I&#8217;ll be continuing to work with <a href=\"http:\/\/bigfagpress.org\">Big Fag Press<\/a> (we&#8217;re starting the year with our <a href=\"http:\/\/bigfagpress.org\/2013\/01\/big-fag-press-emerging-artists-residency-programme\/\">Big Fag Press Emerging Artist Residency Programme<\/a>). And at the end of the year, the <a href=\"http:\/\/yeomansproject.com\"><em>Yeomans Project<\/em><\/a>, a collaboration with <a href=\"http:\/\/ianmilliss.com\">Ian Milliss<\/a>, will finally arrive at the Art Gallery of NSW (for which it was originally proposed in 1975). I&#8217;ll be working at <a href=\"http:\/\/works.bepress.com\/lucas_ihlein\/\">University of Wollongong<\/a> all the while, teaching <a href=\"http:\/\/www.caos201.medadada.net\">Social Intersections<\/a> again with <a href=\"http:\/\/broganbunt.net\">Brogan Bunt<\/a>, as well as guiding our third year media arts students through to the end of their degree.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2012:<\/strong><br \/>\nLots of mentoring of young artists going on this year. Besides young Albie May, here are some other youngsters I&#8217;m working with&#8230; I&#8217;m lecturing in Media Arts at University of Wollongong, collaborating with Brogan Bunt on a new subject called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.caos201.medadada.net\/subject-outline\/\">SOCIAL INTERSECTIONS<\/a>. I&#8217;m also mentoring Laura Hindmarsh, who won a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jumpmentoring.com.au\/ArtistsMentors.aspx?id=214\">JUMP programme<\/a> place for 2012. Plus, for more than a year now, we&#8217;ve had our wonderful intern at Big Fag Press, <a href=\"http:\/\/bigfagpress.org\/2012\/01\/louises-intern-report\/\">Louise Anderson<\/a>, helping us out. [Update &#8211; in September, <a href=\"http:\/\/ianmilliss.com\">Ian Milliss<\/a> and I won the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fac.org.au\/fremantle-arts-centre-print-award\">Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award<\/a> for our <em><a href=\"http:\/\/yeomansproject.com\">Yeomans Project<\/a><\/em> &#8211; very pleasing news]<\/p>\n<p><strong>2011:<\/strong><br \/>\nI&#8217;m working on being a dad! Lizzie and I welcomed little <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/bilateral\/collections\/72157627807067956\/\">Albie May<\/a> in September.<br \/>\nThis year, I&#8217;m working with <a href=\"http:\/\/milliss.com\">Ian Milliss<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/yeomansproject.com\">Yeomans Project<\/a>, which exists as a blog, a series of prints made on the Big Fag Press, an exhibition at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.accaonline.org.au\/PowertothePeople\">ACCA<\/a>, and a series of events (including a bus tour). Until mid-year, I&#8217;m continuing with <a href=\"http:\/\/tending.net.au\">Tending<\/a>, in collaboration with <a href=\"http:\/\/weedyconnection.com\">Diego Bonetto<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><strong>July to November 2010<\/strong><br \/>\nI&#8217;m working on an <em>Environmental Audit<\/em> as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mca.com.au\/default.asp?page_id=10&#038;content_id=6864\">MCA&#8217;s exhibition In the Balance: Art for a Changing World<\/a>. The project involves a blog and a series of prints produced on the <a href=\"http:\/\/bigfagpress.org\">Big Fag Press<\/a>, and a whole lotta conversations&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also in 2010, I&#8217;m gardening<\/strong> with my co-digger Diego Bonetto, out at the Sydney College of the Arts in Rozelle, in a project called Tending. Budding gardeners are welcome to come and join in! <a href=\"http:\/\/tending.net.au\">You can follow the project blog here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As of the end of 2009 I finished my PhD! <\/strong><br \/>\nIt was a practice-based research project through Deakin University, called <em>Framing Everyday Experience: Blogging as Art<\/em>. The thesis consisted of 2 blog\/art projects, <a href=\"http:\/\/kellerberrin.com\">Bilateral Kellerberrin<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/thesham.info\">Bilateral Petersham<\/a>, and an accompanying exhibition and written exegesis. (An early paper I wrote about <em>Bilateral Kellerberrin<\/em>, which forms the basis of one of the chapters is <a href=\"https:\/\/lucazoid.com\/bilateral\/bilateral-blogging-essay-about-bilateral-kellerberrin-now-available\/\">here<\/a>.) If you&#8217;d like to read the exegesis, email me and I&#8217;ll send you the PDF.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In first semester 2010:<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8230;I was teaching part time Media Arts at Wollongong University. I taught Media Arts 101 (introduction to media arts theory and practice, including audio, photography, and video); and Media Arts 201 (theory and practice of experimental film and video).<\/p>\n<p><strong>And also earlier this year:<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8230;in a rather labour intensive learning experiment, I guest-edited an edition of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artlink.com.au\/\">Artlink <\/a>magazine, themed &#8220;the Underground&#8221; &#8211; which launched in June&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8211; &#8211; Older stuff &#8211; &#8211; &#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>In July-August 2009:<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8230;I presented my exhibition <em>The Sham<\/em> at the George Paton gallery in Melbourne. <\/p>\n<p><strong>In July 2009:<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8230; I worked with Louise Curham (<a href=\"http:\/\/teachingandlearningcinema.org\">Teaching and Learning Cinema<\/a>) to present <em>(Wo)man with Mirror<\/em> at Artspace, Sydney (more on that below)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>In May 2009: <\/strong><br \/>\n&#8230;I worked with Astrid L&#8217;orange and Nick Keys on a thoroughly documented re-enactment of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pushandpull.com.au\"> Allan Kaprow&#8217;s Push and Pull: A Furniture Comedy for Hans Hoffman<\/a> (originally 1963).<\/p>\n<p><strong>In March 2009:<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8230;I spent a lot of time thinking a lot about goats for the project <a href=\"http:\/\/gruffling.com\">GRUFFLING<\/a>, as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osw.com.au\/wbst\/\">West Brunswick Sculpture Triennale<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In late 2008: <\/strong><br \/>\n&#8230;I was contemplating <a href=\"https:\/\/lucazoid.com\/bilateral\/cold-turkey\/\">going off-line for a year<\/a>. Sadly for some (happily for others) that project has been postponed for the moment&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Since 2005:<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8230;I&#8217;ve been working with <a href=\"http:\/\/squatspace.com\">SquatSpace<\/a> on the <a href=\"http:\/\/squatspace.com\/redfern\">Redfern Waterloo Tour of Beauty<\/a>. SquatSpace has been around since 2000, and also organises the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/squatspace.com\/squatfest\">SquatFest<\/a> Film festival. There&#8217;s talk about a big &#8220;history of SquatSpace and friends&#8221; exhibition in 2011&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Every so often:<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8230; I give invited guest lectures and conference presentations on topics such as Blogging as a Form of Art, <a href=\"https:\/\/lucazoid.com\/bilateral\/tag\/expanded-cinema\/\">Expanded Cinema<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lucazoid.com\/bilateral\/tag\/re-enactment\/\">Re-Enactment<\/a> as an Artistic Strategy, <a href=\"https:\/\/lucazoid.com\/bilateral\/tag\/relational-aesthetics\/\">Relational Aesthetics<\/a>, Michel de Certeau&#8217;s <em>Walking in the City<\/em>, New Public Art Practices, the work of SquatSpace, Big Fag Press, and of course the obligatory vanity speeches about my own artwork.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On an ongoing (very slow) basis:<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8230; I collaborate with Louise Curham with our collaborative project, <a href=\"http:\/\/teachingandlearningcinema.org\">The Teaching and Learning Cinema<\/a> (The TLC). In 2009, we re-enacted Guy Sherwin&#8217;s <em>Man with Mirror<\/em> (1976) &#8211; our version is <em>(Wo)man with Mirror<\/em>, which we presented for the first time at Artspace, in an exhibition curated by Anneke Jaspers called Imprint. In 2007, we re-created the conditions for the experience of Anthony McCall&#8217;s <em>Long Film for Ambient Light<\/em> (1975). <\/p>\n<p>[The TLC is a development from the Sydney Moving Image Coalition (SMIC). As SMIC, we also toured Anthony McCall&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.squatspace.com\/cone\/\">Line Describing a Cone<\/a> to various cities around Australia. I have contributed an essay on the TLC&#8217;s re-creation of Anthony McCall&#8217;s <em>Long Film for Ambient Light<\/em> (1975) for a (very long time coming) forthcoming book entitled <em>Perform, Repeat, Record:  A Critical Anthology of Live Art in History<\/em>, edited by Amelia Jones and Adrian Heathfield.]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Since 2005:<\/strong><br \/>\nI&#8217;ve worked with the <a href=\"http:\/\/bigfagpress.org\">Big Fag Press<\/a> (Sydney&#8217;s artist-run offset printing co-op). Astoundingly, a print I made on the Press won the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atthevanishingpoint.com.au\/index.php?p=1_110\">Marrickville Art Prize<\/a> in 2007. It was a <a href=\"http:\/\/flickr.com\/photos\/bilateral\/578424929\/\">map of all the garbage<\/a> I found on a traffic island in Adelaide.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, several members of Big Fag Press joined forces with various artists, activists and zinesters to purchase a RISOgraphic stencil press, called the <a href=\"http:\/\/fagette.net\/\">Rizzeria<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Between 2006 and 2008:<\/strong><br \/>\nI dabbled in creative writing, hammering out <a href=\"http:\/\/1001.net.au\/cgi-bin\/isengine?action=getXML&amp;target=results&amp;o=1001&amp;style=field_number&amp;category=performance&amp;template_type=search&amp;noauto=true&amp;sort=number&amp;offset=75&amp;limit=25&amp;sortorder=321&amp;period=&amp;field=time&amp;ss_contributor=Lucas+Ihlein&amp;dd=&amp;mm=&amp;yyyy=&amp;ss_thread=\">occasional stories<\/a> for Barbara Campbell&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/1001.net.au\">1001 Nights Cast<\/a>.
